Ahirani or Khandeshi is the language spoken in Khandesh, India. Khandesh is ancient name given to areas known in the present day as Jalgaon, Dhulia, Nandurbar and part of Nasik and Aurangabad districts. The language extensively forms the small group situated in the territories adjoining Bhili and Marathi.

The region consists of Khandeshi proper (spoken in Maharashtra, with reach of approx. 1.6 million speakers), Dhanki (spoken in Gujarat, with reach of approx. 140,000 speakers); and Ahirani (spoken in Maharashtra and Gujarat, with the reach of approx. 10 million speakers).

Khandeshi is the generic and region based name that includes in its ambit Ahirani. In terms of social reach, Khandeshi is classified into various dialects, important ones being, Ahirani, Bhilli, Pardeshi and Lewa –Patidar.
