About Khmer Language
Khmer or Cambodian is the language spoken by Khmer people, and which is also the official language of Cambodia. Khmer is popular and spoken in Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, USA, France and Australia. It is the second most widely spoken Austro-Asiatic language, standing in line after Vietnamese, with over 22 million speakers, of which only approximately 21 million alone are the native speakers. Khmer is also known to be the earliest recorded and earliest written language of the Mon-Khmer family.
Moreover, Khmer has its own script, an abugida, which in native Khmer language is meant as Aksar Khmer. Many parts of Khmer language descend from Sanskrit and Pali. Due to geographic proximity, Khmer also finds influences of Thai, Lao, Vietnamese and Cham. Khmer, ranked as 89th language of the world, differs from neighboring languages such as Thai, Lao and Vietnamese in that it is not tonal in nature.
