Yoruba as a Tonal Language

Spoken by over 19 million people, Yoruba is mostly as a tonal language in which every syllable has a tone. This language is spoken in some of the West African Countries and has even been made the official language in Nigeria.

This language has three levels of tones with themed tone being the default tone used commonly. The other two tones are the high and the low tones. When it comes to marking of these tones, the high tones are usually marked with acute accents while the low tones come with grave accents. The mid tone does not have a mark. It is possible to have a single syllable with two tones. This will occur in cases where the vowel that is used is long.
