About Mien Language
Mien language is the primary language spoken in by the Yao people in China, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, and to some extent in US by the native people who have migrated there. On an average, the language has 900,000 speakers in total.
Mien language distantly relates to Hmong language, and it is here that both languages blend together to fall under the Hmong-Mien languages family. Similar to Hmong, Vietnamese and Chinese, Mien language is also tonal and monosyllabic in nature. The language holds 78% lexical similarity with Kim Mun (or the Lanten), 70% with Biao-Jiao Mien, and 61% with Dzao Min respectively.
Mien language makes use of 26 letters of the basic Latin alphabet, wherein, there are 30 initials, 128 finals and eight tones. In addition, the hyphens are the means used in the language to link an adjective to the noun.
