Punjabi or Punjabi is an Indo-Aryan language, which is spoken by the people in Punjab, North India, North Western India and Pakistan. Estimates show that there are approx. 88 million native speakers of the Punjabi language, thereby making it 11th most widely spoken language of the world.
There are many different dialects in Punjabi language, depending on the sub-regions where the language is spoken. For example, the prestigious Majhi dialect is spoken in Majha district, extending to East-central districts of Pakistani Punjab and the Indian Punjab.
The modern day Punjabi generally refers to "Eastern Punjabi" which comprises largely the Majhi, Malwi and Doabi dialects spoken in East Punjab (Punjab). The dialect also covers adjoining areas of Lahore in West Punjab.
