Interpretation – Is it not Translation?

Thursday 28 October 2010 @ 11:17 pm

People who hardly deal with the language industry still think that interpretation and translation are synonyms. In both, translation and interpretation, one language is getting transferred into another. Therefore, high degree of knowledge and understanding of both languages (target as well as source) is the most basic requirement. However, the fundamental aspect that differentiates the two is process of interpreting involves spoken ability of the interpreter. He/she does not only have the knowledge of both languages but also have high quality of fluency and clarity. The process is much faster than that of translation in which translator transfers one language to the other with considered approach and check all the parameters before writing it.

Translators only translate documents or web content. However, interpreters required for international meetings and conferences; court cases where witness or criminal cannot speak and/or understand the language which is being used in the court and tours where people are on vacation in different country. Interpreters also get employed during hospital appointments when both patient and doctor speak different languages. Interpreters are best known for providing simultaneous interpretation service.

Simultaneous Interpretation

In simultaneous interpretation, the speaker and listener would have headphones on their ears and interpreter would be translating the language verbally while speaker continues with his/her speech. This kind of interpretation requires concentration and great bilingual fluency because interpreter does not know what speaker is going to say.

Liaison Interpretation

In this kind of interpretation, interpreter passes the information between one or two delegates. The interpretation is very effective in discussion groups and smaller meetings. Another thing that discerns it from simultaneous interpretation is that interpreter does not get chance to ask the speaker to repeat. So, active listening is very much required.

Whisper Interpretation

As the name suggests, interpreter whispers in the ear of the delegate. Whisper interpretation takes place in a scenario where delegates from multiple countries are present. Every delegate who cannot understand the language of the speaker would have an interpreter with him/her. In another scenario, a multilingual interpreter would be sitting between two or three delegates and whispering to them.
